Exploring the Flavors of Kampot: A Journey with Salt

If you are walking along the idyllic riversides of Kampot, you may come across Salt, an establishment which stands as a testament to a fusion of cultures and flavors from around the world. Step inside and you’re also likely to meet Angus and Kiara, the dynamic duo behind this culinary haven, offering a taste of their Australian roots blended with the warmth of Cambodian hospitality. We sat down over a signature coffee to find out more!

Hailing from Queensland, Australia, Angus and Kiara first set foot in Cambodia in 2007. Enchanted by Cambodian culture and the warmth of its people, they found themselves drawn back time and again.

“We decided in 2011 instead of travelling, partying and missing morning busses we would instead invest and try to set up a small cafe to sustain ourselves for an extended stay!”

“The original ‘cafe espresso’ opened on 11/11/11 in an old colonial building in the city centre. The shop grew organically and we soon found ourselves short on seating. We have since moved espresso to its new home, a retired sea salt storage warehouse that we renovated,” they added.

As Cafe Espresso flourished, Angus and Kiara sought new horizons. They envisioned a space where creativity could thrive, a place where gastronomic experimentation knew no bounds.

“Salt was born out of an opportunity to renovate a pair of colonial buildings on the river. We wanted to showcase creative menu items and cocktails while leaving the flagship cafe espresso and rumblefish roastery intact.”

“We opened Salt in December 2023 and are in phases of trialling and implementing exciting new options. It’s a space where we can experiment and follow our creativity around food and drinks to keep things interesting and appealing.”

With Cafe Espresso and Rumblefish Specialty Roasters as its siblings, Salt completes the trifecta, offering a symphony of flavors to tantalize the senses!

A Family Affair

At its core, Salt is more than just a business; it’s a family affair. Angus, Kiara, and their team pour their hearts into creating a welcoming environment, where patrons are embraced like old friends.

“We strive to deliver quality on all fronts, service, taste and experience. We want our customers to leave with a big smile and a full belly!”

Coffee is and has always been a big foundation of our operation, being the only small batch roastery in kampot to deliver high quality beans with no additives.

With a focus on integrity and authenticity, Salt strives to uphold the values of community and camaraderie.

What sets Salt apart is its commitment to quality and innovation. From handcrafted cocktails to inventive menu offerings, every dish tells a story, every sip a journey. As the only small-batch roastery in Kampot, Rumblefish Specialty Roasters ensures that each cup of coffee is a testament to excellence, free from additives and full of flavor.

A Taste of Tradition, A Dash of Innovation

Salt isn’t just about serving great food; it’s about enriching the community and diversifying the culinary landscape. By embracing local talent and championing unique flavor combinations, Salt seeks to redefine the dining experience, one plate at a time. In a world of conformity, Salt dares to stand out, inviting patrons to embark on a culinary odyssey unlike any other.

“We have never been in the business of following the masses. We rely heavily on word of mouth and organic reach. Therefore, we have always tried to set ourselves apart with unique flavour combinations that steer away from the basic and allow customers to enjoy their experience.”

A Home Away from Home

For Angus and Kiara, Cambodia isn’t just a destination; it’s a way of life. With their family roots firmly planted in the soil of Kampot, they have found a place where dreams take flight and bonds are forged.

“Since our family started to grow 10 years ago with our children, we believe Cambodia is a great place to raise a family. Our team are all from local villages and it is an honour to be able to support and see their skills grow over time.”
