Celebrating Khmer Art: Color Outside the Lines Wraps Up at SOSORO Museum
The Color Outside the Lines exhibition, a two-day celebration of Khmer art and culture, recently concluded at the SOSORO – Preah Srey Içanavarman Museum in Phnom Penh. Organized by Humans of Phnom Penh (HoPP), the event brought together a diverse group of artists, cultural enthusiasts, students, and members of the public to celebrate the creativity and evolving narratives of Cambodia.
Showcasing the Next Generation of Khmer Artists
The exhibition featured 15 selected artists whose work captured the spirit, identity, and unique perspectives of contemporary Khmer life. Over the course of two days, visitors had the chance to experience vibrant pieces that reflected Cambodia’s rich cultural tapestry, alongside talks and presentations that provided deeper insight into the stories behind the art.
The event culminated with the announcement of the top three artists:
🥇 1st Place: Im Seila
🥈 2nd Place: Rith Bonrotanak
🥉 3rd Place: Kunthea Kou
His Excellency Samheng Boros, Minister attached to the Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia, joined the award ceremony as the chief guest, offering inspiring closing remarks about the power of culture and community in shaping the nation’s future.
Empowering Cambodian Creatives
Founded by Niraj Gupta, Humans of Phnom Penh aims to amplify local voices and stories through visual storytelling and community engagement. Speaking at the event, Gupta emphasized the importance of providing artists with platforms to share their work: “Art is not just an expression; it is a bridge connecting history, identity, and the future. This exhibition is just the beginning of our mission to elevate Khmer artists to greater heights.”
The event received strong support from a range of community-minded businesses and organizations, including IBCC, ItaCham, CanCham, Phillip Bank (Diamond Sponsor), Prince Foundation, TVS, SBC India Group, CamEd Business School, Macro Solutions, and hospitality partners Dakshin’s Restaurant, Mekong Authentic India Restaurant, Namaste Indian Restaurant, and UWA Korean Street Food.
Media partners Kiri Post, TVK, Khmer Times, and Cambodia Investment Review also played a key role in amplifying the event’s message and bringing these powerful stories to a wider audience.
Looking to the Future
As the event drew to a close, HoPP extended its gratitude to all the partners, artists, and visitors who came together to make this celebration of Cambodian creativity a success.
