A Bassac Quarter Staple: Abode Bar & Lounge

Abode Bar & Lounge, the brainchild of Mark Lind and his partners, was born out of a vision to create a welcoming space where locals, expats, and tourists could come together to savor fine beverages, delectable cuisine, and experience the capital’s must-see Bassac lane. In an exclusive interview with Mark, we unveil the story behind Abode and its enduring charm.

The Birth of Abode: A Home Away from Home

Abode Bar & Lounge found its humble beginnings in November 2019, just before the onset of the global pandemic. Located in what was once a residence, the concept of Abode was shaped around the idea of creating a homely ambiance, hence the name “Abode.” Initially focusing on offering fine wines, cocktails, and tapas, Abode quickly became a staple in the Bassac area – Including Bassac Lane and Bassac Street (St 308) – particularly as one of the few establishments providing restaurant-style dining options. As the area burgeoned, Abode became an integral part of the community, contributing to the development of what is now known as the Bassac Quarter.

For Mark and his partners, the decision to set up business in Cambodia was driven by more than just opportunity; it was a testament to their appreciation for the country’s unique charm. Phnom Penh’s laid-back vibe, coupled with its cultural diversity, makes it an ideal location for a venture like Abode. As Mark notes, “Phnom Penh is an easy living city with a good diversity of cultures. Cambodia is very central to all Asian countries.”

A Culinary Oasis & Community Asset

At Abode, culinary excellence reigns supreme. With a team of Khmer chefs boasting extensive experience in both local and international fare, every dish is a masterpiece. Whether indulging in tapas or savoring a full-course meal, guests are treated to a gastronomic journey like no other. And let’s not forget the extensive selection of wines, whiskies, and beverages that perfectly complement the dining experience.

Beyond its role as a dining destination, Abode contributes to the fabric of the community by providing a space where people from all walks of life can come together. Its diverse clientele, comprising Cambodians, expatriates, and tourists from around the globe, reflects the inclusive nature of Abode. By offering a quality environment for socializing and relaxation, Abode enriches the cultural tapestry of Phnom Penh and diversifies the array of activities available in Cambodia.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent downturn in tourism, Abode persevered. Thanks to its classification as a restaurant, it managed to navigate through closures relatively unscathed. This resilience reflects not only the dedication of its team but also the unwavering support of its loyal patrons.
