Pomelo: Phnom Penh’s Hidden Garden Bar Blending Style, Calm, and Craft

Down a quiet lane off Street 184 sits Pomelo, one of Phnom Penh’s most inviting new spots. More than just a bar, it’s a place that blends design, good drinks, and warm atmosphere in equal measure. Hidden behind leafy walls, this garden villa feels like a peaceful retreat from the buzz of the city.

“We envisioned a design-forward oasis in the city, somewhere with a sense of calm, refinement, and warmth,” says Drew, who founded Pomelo with his husband Nick. “When we founded Pomelo, the idea was to bring together a love of architecture, interiors, and hospitality. I’ve long had a passion for spaces that feel as good as what they serve.”

The villa’s architecture nods to Cambodia’s New Khmer and Van Molyvann styles, while inside, the mid-century and Scandinavian-inspired design brings everything together. The attention to detail is clear in every corner, from the lighting and furniture to the glasses, all part of a carefully considered space that feels personal yet relaxed.

More Than Just a Bar

Since opening at the start of 2025, Pomelo has quickly become known for its atmosphere and thoughtful approach. “Our dream is to establish Pomelo as one of Phnom Penh’s quietly influential hospitality destinations,” Drew says. “A place locals, expats, and travellers alike think of when they want something special but unpretentious.”

The menu balances familiar flavours with creative touches. Guests love the pineapple and chili margarita, a drink Drew describes as “a perfect balance” that surprised even seasoned cocktail lovers. The Cynar spritz and other lesser-known classics add something fresh to the Phnom Penh cocktail scene.

Food-wise, Pomelo keeps it simple but quality-driven. Pizzas, bar snacks, and share plates made for easy evenings. “By doing fewer things but doing them well, we avoid overextending,” Drew explains.

The design of the space also invites conversation. Guests often comment on the ‘statement loo’ a bold yellow mid-century inspired restroom complete with rattan details, an arched inset, and even an audiobook playing in the background. “It’s funny how something so simple has become a talking point,” Drew laughs. “But it shows how much people notice the details.”

Behind the scenes, bar manager Chey Sim leads the bar with high standards, while Chef Phearon, guided remotely by Nick’s mother in Italy, blends local ingredients with Mediterranean influence. “We’ve built a team that genuinely cares about what we do,” Drew says. “The staff are not just servers — they’re custodians of the guest experience.”

A Creative Addition to Phnom Penh

Pomelo stands out not just for its look, but for what it brings to the city’s growing bar and restaurant scene. “Phnom Penh has exciting bars, but not too many that combine architectural elegance, cocktail craftsmanship, and a garden-villa feel. We try to achieve that,” says Drew.

He also sees Pomelo as a space for collaboration and community. “We employ local staff and work with Cambodian suppliers and creatives whenever possible — musicians, artists, designers. By offering a bar that values architecture, aesthetics, and craft, we add a layer of sophistication and diversity to Phnom Penh’s F&B landscape.”

Drew believes Phnom Penh’s raw creativity is what makes it the perfect place for a concept like Pomelo. “Phnom Penh pulses with possibility. There’s a raw energy here, and I’ve always loved how the old and new exist side by side. The tropical light, the laneways, the way people move between tradition and modernity, it’s inspiring.”

“This city gives space for dreams, if you come in with curiosity, respect, and persistence,” he adds. “You have to move with its flow.”
