From Spreadsheets to Stand-Up: David Benaim Turns Excel into Art

David Benaim

ChatGPT has been doing a lot of heavy lifting lately, much like Excel has for the past (so I hear) 20-odd years since its inception. Forget that, I just Googled it, and it’s actually 34 years old (I think he mentioned this in the set somewhere, forgive me).

Point still stands: both have been pushing something different, something that drives change, and that’s not unlike the comedy set I just watched by David Benaim.

I’ll be the first to admit I know nothing about Excel, let alone its uses, downfalls and so on. But it’s kind of nice to sneak a peek into the world of accountants and administrators and those office people who use it, especially when someone makes something funny out of it.

Hence why, my expectations weren’t particularly high.

Here’s where that changed.

David delivered something unexpected, not for everyone, but certainly something the audience wasn’t prepared for: geek-fuelled, comedy-infused life experience with an unapologetic, authentic twist. Now that’s a rare find.

Not all the Excel puns landed for me like a great comedy set does in other ways. But what was excellent was the story David built throughout. As the performance evolved, the narrative wove itself together brilliantly.

His early mention of the Asymptote graph and Alan Turing were spun seamlessly into a web that caught the audience, only for him to unravel it all under the spotlight in the final, unfiltered moments of the show.

Tears were shed, laughter shared, and between the words of a man baring his soul to a captivated room, it didn’t matter whether the comedy was your style or the throwaway puns missed the mark. This is a must-watch for anyone looking for something meaningful and better yet, something far deeper than a cheap laugh.

David will perform Excel Comedy & Mathem-antics at Edinburgh Fringe daily at 1:30pm at The Caves from 31 July to 24 August (Sunday – Friday). Book tickets here.
