The Tree Café: Phnom Penh’s Daytime Retreat with a Heart for Community

Tucked into the familiar charm of Bassac Square, The Tree Café is a calm, creative space that has quickly grown from the roots of a popular nightlife venue. Open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM—just before the bar next door kicks off—this new café concept was born out of a desire to bring something different to the Tonle Bassac neighborhood: a space for connection, calm, and community during daylight hours.

“I’ve always loved the atmosphere of this neighborhood in the mornings,” says founder Vang Tor. “We wanted to give people a place to gather, work, and recharge—something relaxed but still full of intention.”

From Nightlife to Daylight

After nearly four years running a successful bar, Vang saw a gap in the area: a need for quality coffee, good food, and friendly service during the day. The Tree Café is her answer to that. With a menu built on simplicity and quality—think brewed coffees, specialty teas, and grilled sandwiches—it’s a casual yet thoughtful spot for both regulars and new visitors.

“We believed there was a space for morning culture here,” Vang says. “People want good coffee, but they also want a place that feels personal and grounded.”

Designed for Every Kind of Day

The space is bright, green, and welcoming—designed to help guests feel comfortable whether they’re dropping in for a quiet breakfast, catching up with friends, or powering through a few hours of remote work. It’s an environment where every detail matters, from the natural décor to the friendly team that brings it to life.

“We want to offer teas and coffees you might not find elsewhere in Phnom Penh,” Vang adds. “It’s about sharing something different, but without making it feel exclusive or complicated.”

Community First

More than just a business, The Tree Café is part of a wider vision Vang has for local community engagement. While the café is still in its early days, she’s focused on growth that creates opportunities for others.

“Right now, we’re a small team, but we’re determined to grow and hopefully create jobs for the local community,” she says. “This space is not just for serving drinks—it’s for building something together.”

Looking ahead, The Tree Café plans to host small art exhibitions, book swaps, and community talks. The idea is simple: a café that gives back to the place it came from.

A Place to Pause

The Tree Café may be new, but it already feels lived-in—a place where early risers, creatives, and curious wanderers can all find common ground. With thoughtful drinks, warm food, and a founder who clearly loves her city, it’s a welcome addition to Phnom Penh’s café scene.

“It’s not just a business for me,” Vang says. “It’s a space I love being in. I love seeing familiar faces, and I love when someone new walks in and finds their spot here.”
