“I run an escape room in Phnom Penh. When I started, there was nothing like it in the city,” Andy explains. “I wanted to bring a fun, interactive experience that challenges people and brings them together — something completely different from the usual routine.”
Four Months In and Just Getting Started
“We’ve been open for four months now,” says Andy. “The dream is to open more rooms and possibly more locations in the future. There’s nothing quite like this in the city, so I felt it was the right time and place to bring something different to the scene.”
The format is simple but effective: You and your team are placed in a themed room with one goal – escape before the clock runs out. Along the way, you’ll face puzzles, clues, and challenges that require teamwork and creative thinking.
A Rare Chance to Be Present
“The best part is watching people come out of the game smiling, laughing, and full of energy,” Andy says. “It’s fun to observe how different teams approach the challenges and how people work together. I’ve learned a lot about behavior and teamwork through this.”
But beyond the entertainment, ANNO89 gives players something increasingly rare: the opportunity to disconnect from their phones and reconnect with the moment.
“It’s a great team-building activity, lots of fun, and it gives your brain a workout. Plus, it’s one of the few experiences where you really put your phone down and stay fully present for an hour — and you walk away with a lasting memory.”
Filling a Gap in the City’s Social Life
Asked why this business matters to Phnom Penh, Andy is clear: “It fills a unique gap between just working and the usual options of going out to eat or drink. This offers something new — a different kind of fun that’s active, social, and mentally engaging.”
Andy’s ambitions extend beyond puzzles and clues. “My favorite thing about Cambodia is definitely the people — they’re kind, respectful, and always welcoming. If I can grow this business, I’d love to invest more into social projects here in Phnom Penh to give something back to the community.”
